What is PCOS? There is a lot of information available about PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Actually the name can be a little misleading as it does not mean one has cysts. Women have two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus and these produce eggs on a monthly basis. Ovarian cysts are actually fluid filled sacs that develop within an ovary. Unfortunately for the sufferers, the exact cause of PCOS is not currently known, although many theories exist. What is known about it is that PCOS is a common hormonal disorder that affects1 out of 10 women mostly between the ages of 14-55, making it one of the most common hormonal disorders in this age group. PCOS may produce hormone imbalances and the problems associated with this including irregular periods and difficulties in conceiving. Other symptoms of PCOS are infertility, obesity, heart complications and disease, type 2 diabetes and endometrial cancer.
Skipping meals, eating on the run, living on fast foods, drinking excess alcohol, crash dieting, leaving too long a gap in between meals, can as you well know have disastrous effects on your weight! The last thing you would do is put the wrong fuel or oil in your car. Yet on a daily basis it’s all too easy to do exactly that to your body!
